Tannenbaum

Dec07-Tannenbaum.jpgWinter is whiter this year. I'm in mourning for our lodgepole pines, half of which have been felled, and of those still standing most are a sickly shade of rust. This beautiful young one in our yard is already infected. It looks just like the faithful pine in the song, green against the white. But in the spring it will fall with the rest. Inside, waiting for spring, I have seedlings of white pine, a memorial to my great uncle Toby. Hopefully they can thrive where the lodgepole has not. For now, we're taking the time to appreciate the beauty of these trees, and the last of their cones are a part of all my holiday decorations this year. I would welcome 30 days at -30, if it would save the rest of these trees. But as usual, it's warming up again after a week of cold, and this snow will be replaced by grey skies and brown muck for a bit before we get another cold snap. I'm wishing for a white Christmas - white and green.

Lovely post, lovely image, Anita. And I, too, hope for a white Christmas, something very rare in Vancouver.

That's a very fine tree. Will you decorate it?

Send some of that snow down here in time for Christmas! It seems it's snowing a little every few days -- I saw maybe the biggest flakes EVER the other day! (yesterday?) -- which is very odd but very nice, too! It snowed on Monday, too, in Vancouver and Lael and I got excited. (Poor girl always thinks that when it's snowing she'll have enough to play in. Hopefully next time!)

Warm wishes for a snowy holiday!

It's hard to predict if the cold weather will come around at the right time, but yes, if it's well below zero for New Year's when we have our guests visiting, I'm going to try making ice decorations. The low branches would be ideal to hang them from, and the birds will find them to eat the fruit and seeds when it thaws again.

Right now it's warming up, which means lots of snow. I just drove home from a belly dance hafla in town, and while it wasn't sticking badly there, here at home it's a degree cooler, and I had a hard time seeing far enough ahead of me to stay on my side of the white stripe where the road used to be. Our street is going to be well buried by morning. I will try to be up early with the camera again. I bet we get a lot more than the 2cm forecast in the weather report. Wish I could send some your way, but hey, if you want snow, come visit us!

Tomorrow, I'm going to put up our Christmas tree, program our outdoor lights on the house, and set out our small family of deer. Might even string a tree or two, if the weather report is right and we actually get above zero tomorrow. It was so cold at our windy post office this evening, I could hardly hold my key to get my po box open. I want it to warm up, so we get the usual week of warm mushy weather over with and get back to the snow in time for Christmas.

Which is only 10 days away! Can't believe it! Time to do my Christmas post, soon as the tree is up. So much to do...

zzzzzzz......

Sure looks like Christmas in Pritchard - here's hoping we all have a white one. Nice photo Anita - matches the cards I'm sending out this year. So nice to keep in touch through your interesting blog keep up the good work - we all enjoy reading it.
Enjoy the holiday preps
Luv Mommsie

Thanks, Bev! And thank you for the gorgeous card, we just received it.

You know how it is when you're under extreme stress, even the things that usually are a pleasure suddenly seem like work. I've let the blog go, trying to stay on top of other things. But you know me, once the snow turns everything magical, I have to get out there with the camera - and then share!

Looking forward to time off over the holidays to get back to some writing again, and blogging. Apologies to all my readers for my going so long between posts. (I guess it falls in the "New Years Resolutions category - along with getting more sleep!)

Thanks for commenting, it's a great motivator. Cheers!
